How are fibroids treated?

The most important question to ask is “Do the fibroids need to be treated at all?”.

The vast majority of fibroids grow as a woman gets older, and tend to shrink after menopause.

Most fibroids do not need treatment. Obviously fibroids that are causing significant symptoms need treatment.

Your gynaecologist will evaluate your condition and make a recommendation based on:

  • the amount of blood loss and pain during menstrual periods
  • the rate of growth of the fibroid
  • the absence or presence of cancer
  • your age, physical condition, and desire for more children.

Fibroids can be treated with medications or surgery or in exceptional cases and conditions by techniques like embolisation.
