But may be difficult in uteri with large fibroids

  • Abdominal Hysterectomy :

This involves taking a large cut on the abdomen and removing the uterus through this cut. The patient is in hospital for up to a week and there is large scar on the abdomen.

  • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy :

A very small cut is made on the abdomen and a laparoscope is inserted and the uterus is removed using special instruments.

Before you have a myomectomy or hysterectomy, you might be given a medicine for 2 to 3 months to shrink the size of the fibroid. This will make the operation more easier to perform.

If you are close to menopause, your doctor may prescribe this medicine for you to take until you are in menopause, so that you may not need surgery. This is especially important if surgery is particularly risky for you because of one or more medical problems you may have.
